How to Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera.

Tips and a behind-the-scenes look at my warm, candid style.

If the idea of being in front of a camera makes your palms sweat or your smile feel forced, you’re not alone — it’s one of the most common things people tell me before a shoot, and it makes total sense! Most of us aren’t used to being photographed professionally, and suddenly being the focus can feel a bit awkward.

But here’s the good news: feeling comfortable on camera isn’t about being a model. It’s about feeling like yourself — relaxed, natural, and at ease. That’s where I come in.

In this post, I’ll share a few of my go-to tips for helping you feel good in front of the lens, plus a little behind-the-scenes insight into how I work with clients to bring out their real personalities, quirks and all.

1. We’ll get to know each other first

Before I even lift the camera, I like to get chatting. Whether it’s a quick call, a pre-shoot coffee, or just a few messages back and forth, I want to understand who you are, what makes you feel good, and what kind of images you’re drawn to.

This connection helps build trust, and trust is everything when it comes to natural, candid photography. I’m not just showing up with a camera and clicking away; I’m showing up as a person who’s genuinely interested in you.

2. It’s okay to feel awkward at first!

Seriously, I expect it! You’re not doing anything wrong if you feel a bit unsure. In fact, I build this into the way I shoot. The first 10 minutes or so of any session are like a warm-up — we chat, move around, I snap a few relaxed shots, and I’ll gently guide you through everything.

Think of it like dipping your toes in before a swim. You don’t have to be “on” straight away — we ease in and you’ll feel like a natural in no time.

3. You don’t have to pose — I’ll guide you naturally

I don’t do stiff poses or awkward instructions like “now tilt your head… no, the other way…” (cringe). My style is warm, relaxed, and real — more about movement, connection, and emotion than forced smiles.

I’ll give you gentle prompts instead, like “walk towards me chatting like you normally would” or “can you make each other laugh?” I might even crack a few bad jokes to help things along (you’ve been warned).

4. You’ll never be left wondering what to do

This is a big one. So many people tell me they feel nervous because they don’t know how to stand, smile, or act in front of the camera. But I’ve got you! I’ll always offer gentle direction if you need it — but in a way that feels natural and unpressured.

You’re never expected to perform or pretend — just to be present. And I promise, that’s enough.

5. We’ll choose a location that feels like you

The right setting makes a big difference. I love working in natural light, outdoors or in spaces that feel relaxed and familiar. Whether it’s a walk through the countryside, your favourite coffee spot, your home, or somewhere new and exciting, we’ll choose a location that suits your personality and makes you feel at ease.

Bonus? You’ll also have something lovely to do — whether that’s walking, talking, cuddling your dog, or simply soaking up the view.

6. It’s not about being perfect — it’s about being you.

This might be the most important one of all. My style is all about the real stuff — the in-between moments, the genuine expressions, the way you scrunch your nose when you laugh or how your partner looks at you when you’re not even posing.

I’m not looking for perfect. I’m looking for you, just as you are.

Behind the Lens: My Approach

Every shoot is a little different, but my goal is always the same: to make you feel seen, heard, and celebrated. I use natural light (no big setups or flashing bulbs), I don’t rush, and I shoot in a relaxed, conversational way that feels more like a natural conversation than a photoshoot.

I also show you some of the images I take as we go, so you can see how amazing you look and start to feel more confident with each click.

By the end of the session, most people tell me it felt “way easier than they thought” — and that’s exactly what I want.
