Why I Don’t Shoot Big Weddings (And Why Mini Weddings & Elopements Have My Heart)
When people find out I’m a wedding photographer, one of the first questions they often ask is: “Do you shoot big weddings?”
The short answer? I don’t.
And there’s a really good reason why.
I’ve found that the kind of photography I love doing – natural, candid, relaxed – is so much more at home in the world of mini weddings and elopements. These intimate celebrations allow for real connection, genuine moments, and a beautiful, unhurried experience for both you and me.
Big Weddings Can Feel Like a Performance
There’s something magical about weddings, but once guest lists hit the hundreds and timelines become jam-packed, the day can start to feel more like an event to “get through” than a day to savour.
In large weddings, the couple is often pulled in a thousand directions – hugging Auntie Sue, checking the seating plan, sneaking in ten seconds to eat. I completely get why some people love the buzz of a big celebration, but I’ve come to realise that I work best in a different kind of setting.
I Had a Small Wedding Too
In November 2023, I married my husband Jordan in a small, intimate ceremony that felt exactly right for us. We chose a relaxed, personal day surrounded by our favourite people (and our pug, Beans, of course!). It wasn’t about ticking boxes or performing traditions – it was about the love we share and making memories we’ll treasure forever.
That experience changed me in the best way. It confirmed everything I already felt about weddings – that small can be powerful, and meaningful doesn’t have to mean elaborate. I came away even more sure that these are the kinds of weddings I want to be part of.
Intimate Days = Intentional Moments
With mini weddings and elopements, everything feels more intentional. The couple usually chooses to strip things back, focusing on what matters most: each other, their closest people, and the moment they say “I do.”
As a photographer, that means I get to slow down, blend into the background, and truly document the atmosphere – the soft touches, the side glances, the belly laughs. There's space for creativity and storytelling without the time pressure or chaos of a huge itinerary.
Less Fuss, More Feeling
The kind of people who choose mini weddings or elopements often share the same mindset as me:
They value connection over perfection, and moments over formalities.
You’re not worried about table favours or dramatic entrances – you just want to marry your favourite person in a way that feels like you. That’s exactly the kind of energy I love to photograph.
Every Detail Still Matters
Just because a wedding is small, doesn’t mean it isn’t incredibly special! In fact, I’d argue it’s even more so. Whether it’s two people on a hillside or a quiet ceremony with 20 guests, these days often have a quiet magic that’s impossible to fake.
You’ve thought carefully about the music, the location, your outfit. You might read your vows in private or share a picnic afterwards. And I’m there to capture every part of it – gently, honestly, and with care.
The Right Photographer for the Right Day
Ultimately, I believe it’s so important to choose a photographer whose energy matches the day you’re planning. I thrive in calm, intimate spaces where we can take our time and let things unfold naturally. That’s why I’ve chosen to focus on mini weddings and elopements only.
If that sounds like your kind of day, I’d love to be part of it.
